Triple-S remains the only company in Puerto Rico to offer a complete range of health insurance plans, serving individuals, families, employers, and beneficiaries of Medicaid and Medicare Advantage, in addition to providing a variety of life, property, and contingency insurance products.

Amid the shortage of specialists and other health professionals, Triple-S becomes a founding partner of the Fundación para el Futuro de la Salud to expand access to health services by allocating funds to support medical residencies and postgraduate studies for health professionals.

A partnership between the UPR Dr. Federico Trilla Hospital, March of Dimes, and Fundación Triple-S establishes a pilot project for group prenatal care. Two years of results show a significant reduction in premature births.

To commemorate its 65th anniversary, Triple-S launches the first advertisement created 100% with artificial intelligence in Puerto Rico and Latin America, honoring its years of service to Puerto Rico. Additionally, the Triple-S abraza la isla initiative brought the anniversary celebration to communities, promoting social connection. Over 600 employee volunteers participated, impacting more than 2,000 people across 77 senior centers in 65 municipalities on the island.

In February, Fundación Triple-S hosts a conference with U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy on social isolation and loneliness in Puerto Rico.

Fundación Triple-S commissions the first studies to determine the scope of social isolation and loneliness in the youth and adult populations.

2022

In March, Fundación Triple-S holds the first symposium on Social Isolation in Puerto Rico and its effects on health, with keynote speaker Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a world-renowned researcher on the topic. GuideWell contributes $1 million to the Foundation to address social determinants of health, particularly social isolation, loneliness, and food security.

In February, Triple-S is officially acquired by GuideWell. This historic transaction will combine the efforts of both companies to help eliminate the barriers many individuals and families face in accessing quality, affordable health care in Puerto Rico, Florida, and beyond. Triple-S ceases operations as a public company to become a nonprofit organization, led by its mission to enable healthy lives.

2021

Triple-S establishes a partnership to promote the Dementia Friends chapter in Puerto Rico, aiming to foster greater understanding and more inclusive communities for people with dementia. That same year, the municipality of Loíza became the first to be certified as a Dementia Friend. Since then, a growing number of municipalities on the island have followed suit, obtaining the certification and reaffirming their commitment to the people living with dementia.

2021

Triple-S reaches an agreement to join GuideWell, the parent company of Florida Blue. Both companies are members of the BlueCross BlueShield Association. They share a mission, values, and a commitment to ensuring access to quality health care for the diverse communities they serve.

Triple-S takes a step forward in the healthcare industry by launching, for the first time in Puerto Rico, the all-in-one card for its Triple-S Advantage line of business. This card combined the functionality of a health plan card with a prepaid card, allowing the purchase of items and the payment of utilities, which are considered supplemental benefits that contribute to the overall well-being of beneficiaries.

Triple-S launches the Triple-S en casa app, a tool for home or office delivery of prescription medications and OTC products, making access to medicine safer during the pandemic and promoting convenience for its members.

2019

Staying true to its founders’ vision, Triple-S celebrates its 60th anniversary by reaffirming its commitment to care for the people of Puerto Rico, protecting what matters most: life, health, and property. It is the only plan serving all segments of the health sector. Fundación Triple-S, the company also reinforces its commitment to holistic well-being, focusing on two social determinants of health: food insecurity and emotional well-being.

In line with member needs and technological advances, Triple-S Salud launches TeleConsulta MD, with doctors virtually attending patients seven days a week.

Triple-S Salud is selected as one of the insurers to offer the Puerto Rico Government Health Plan, VITAL, under the new no-region model. In this model, beneficiaries are free to select the plan of their choice.

2017

Triple-S Salud earns the URAC accreditation, a designation that demonstrates the highest commitment to quality health care. It is the first local health plan to receive this accreditation. Triple-S has maintained this rigorous accreditation ever since.

Fundación Triple-S is established as a nonprofit organization to expand the company’s social responsibility efforts and respond to Puerto Rico’s urgent needs following Hurricane Maria. These efforts align with Triple-S’s vision to provide comprehensive individual care by addressing social determinants that impact the health of all Puerto Ricans.

2013

The company lays the groundwork for international market expansion through the acquisition of Atlantic Southern Insurance Company (ASICO) by Triple-S Vida. ASICO was based in Puerto Rico with operations in the U.S. and British Virgin Islands, Anguilla, and Costa Rica. Following the acquisition, the company adopts the name Triple-S Blue.

2013

Triple-S Salud is selected to manage all regions of the Puerto Rico Government Health Plan under the model in place at the time.

Triple-S acquires American Health Medicare, expanding its Medicare Advantage services and plans, and increasing its offerings in this market.

2011
2009

Triple-S Salud completes the acquisition of La Cruz Azul de Puerto Rico and is granted the Blue Cross license, becoming the exclusive Blue Cross Blue Shield Association licensee for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands—an emblem of quality and excellence in its services.

2007

Triple-S becomes the first coordinated care company in Puerto Rico to become a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol Grupo Triple-S (GTS).

Triple-S acquires Great American Life Assurance Company of Puerto Rico (GA Life) and merges it with Seguros de Vida Triple-S, forming Triple-S Vida, the largest life insurance company in Puerto Rico.

Triple-S, Inc. expands its health insurance offerings by entering the competitive Medicare Advantage segment.

1999

Triple-S Management (TSM) is created as a holding company to facilitate business growth and diversification.

Triple-S Salud launches TeleConsulta, the first health information hotline operated by nurses via—an innovative step responding to the population’s evolving needs.

1995

Triple-S is awarded a contract to provide services under Puerto Rico’s Health Reform. Today, it is the company with the longest continuous service to the island’s Medicaid segment.

1988

As part of its diversification strategy, the company enters the property and casualty insurance market and establishes Seguros Triple-S, now Triple-S Propiedad.

Triple-S enters the life insurance market to complement its health insurance offerings and creates Seguros de Vida Triple-S, now Triple-S Vida.

1984
1966

With the creation of the federal Medicare law, Triple-S, Inc. becomes the Medicare Part B administrator in Puerto Rico for more than 30 years.

1965

The BlueCross and BlueShield Association selects Triple-S, Inc. as its exclusive Blue Shield brand licensee in Puerto Rico.

Motivated by the need to improve access to health care in Puerto Rico, a visionary group of doctors and dentists founded Seguros de Servicios de Salud, known today as Triple-S Salud.
