Prevention and access to healthcare are the cornerstones of our mission and commitment to the communities we serve. Although vital, we are aware that both are just a part of an individual, community and country’s health and that to achieve a comprehensive vision we also have to take into account important social factors such as economic and food security, education, access to transportation, and social cohesion, among others. These social factors can represent between 60 and 75 percent of an individual’s health.
Taking into account these social factors weight in the health of our communities, at Triple-S we realigned our social responsibility efforts to two areas: access to nutritious food and emotional well-being.
Through our partnerships with the Plow to Plate program of World Central Kitchen, we promote local agriculture and encourage the development of more farms and more urban and community gardens. With the Albizu University support, we will be bringing to the communities workshops focused on promoting greater resilience and emotional well-being.
Fundación Triple-S
Our focus is the social factors that affect the health of individuals and their communities. These social factors, which may include where people live, the economic and food security they enjoy, their education, access to transportation, and social cohesion, among other factors, can affect about 60% of a person’s health. The numbers vary depending on the study you look at, but there is no doubt that they have a significant weight on health.
The attention to the social determinants of health falls on all society’s components, from the individual to communities, non-profit organizations, churches, businesses, municipalities, and government. However, we must begin by recognizing them as a factor that affects our health to start to trace ways to address them.
To be effective, we will concentrate our efforts on two social factors:
- Food security in terms of greater access to nutritious foods
- The development of emotional well-being
